Course overview: This modular course is specifically aimed at personnel who need to be able to understand both welding technology and weld coordination aspects as part of the requirements for the title Responsible Welding Coordinator for structural steels*. The course is presented by a practicing Certified IIW/EWF Welding Engineer.
The course also provides a very good overview of a range of welding technology topics which makes the training suitable for all personnel.

*The RWC course is recognised by a number of EN1090 Notified/Certification Bodies including SCCS and Lloyds Register. We also deliver RWC courses directly for Lloyds Register as their preferred training partner. Such modules are ideal preparation for the IIW International Welding Specialist course and count as credits against the 2 foundation modules.
RWC1 – Responsible Welding Coordinator for structural steels

Overview
This module is the foundation for all other modules and provides an introduction to welding coordination.
On completion of the course the candidate should be able to:
- Communicate the language of welding terminology related to aspects of welding coordination.
- Coordinate the integration between structural design, weld design versus effective welding coordination and where it fits in with regard to technical needs.
- Evaluate various welding coordination concepts that influence effective product manufacture.
- Discover specific features and the “Achilles heels” of welding coordination.
- Implement the application of different welding processes and appreciate their needs in effective welding coordination requirements.
- Instigate the controls required on materials and welding consumables, assessing their features & properties.
- Deduce weldability concepts and how this can influence welding coordination routes and control needs.
- Know the causes and avoidance of fabrication and in service problems in welded constructions.
- Coordinate the details of effective welding coordination in satisfying project demands.
- Appreciate the need for weld design and use of weld symbols on drawings
- Prioritise the welding coordination factors that influence costs
- Manage welding procedure and welder qualifications
- Know the range of controls which influence distortion in welded joints
- Clarify the details to accommodate inspection and testing of welded products.
- Specify the 5 categories of weld imperfections and their importance on repair and rework.
- Interpret the scope of application of specific EN/EN ISO welding codes and standards.
- Decide the different needs of calibration, validation and in process monitoring and the standards involved.

- Satisfy the pre course work, the during course exercises, satisfy the end of course assessment and complete the post course case study requirements.
- Engage with the welding engineering course tutor on technical matters related to welding coordination following the course.

RWC 2 - Preparation of pWPS and WPS for structural steel

This module looks at the preparation of preliminary welding procedure specifications and production welding procedure specifications and includes discussions and topics on subjects such as identifying the correct method of qualification; documentation involved; essential variables; range of qualification; preparing the pWPS/WPS; determining essential variables; calculating heat input, preheat; weldability of different steel types; post weld heat treatment; qualifying the pWPS; WPQR requirements; documentation assessment; end of course assessment.

RWC 3 - Preparation of pWPS and WPS for stainless steels and aluminium.

This module looks at the preparation of preliminary welding procedure specifications and production welding procedure specifications for austenitic stainless steels and aluminium alloys and includes discussions and topics on subjects such as identifying the correct method of qualification; documentation involved; essential variables for non-structural steels; range of qualification; preparing the pWPS/WPS; determining essential variables; heat input and interpass temperature control; weldability of different steel types; post weld heat treatment; qualifying the pWPS; WPQR requirements; documentation assessment; analysis of results end of course assessment.

RWC 4 - Visual inspection of welds to EN ISO 5817.

This module is specific to the requirements of the correct visual examination of welds to the specific requirements of the standard and includes topics related to before, during and after welding activities and includes topics such as visual inspection procedures, welding process, material and consumable and their effect on visual acceptance; causes and avoidance of welding defects/imperfections; visual inspection practice; comparing welds to acceptance levels; implementing visual inspection procedures and weld acceptance criterion; end of course assessment.

RWC 5 - Assessing Welding Quality Requirements

This module is designed for personnel who can carry out internal audits to ensure the Factory Production Control and overall Quality Management System is operational and effective. The module takes course member’s through several different audit checklists which relate to very different scopes of assessment, from simple system assessments to full compliance assessments highlighting key areas and shortfalls commonly seen in such Quality Systems. The module is also suitable for External auditors and assessors who are required to provide the appropriate level of assessment to ensure compliance to the nominated standards. Similar to all modules, the module concludes with an end of course assessment.

RWC 6 - Distortion and distortion control

This module is a workshop based module which looks at why welded products distort and includes the various methods and ways in which to control distortion. The course includes discussions and topics on why different metals distort differently; effects of residual stresses; Control techniques and their effectiveness; designing out distortion problems; control during manufacture; remedial techniques; case studies; course and end of course assessments.

RWC 7 - Qualification Testing: WPS, welders and operators

The module is about quality control of welding and welded products and includes topics such as visual testing and welding inspection of qualification testing to BS EN ISO 15614, EN ISO 9606 and other related standards. RWC 8 - Documentation assessment and control

The course spends time on reviewing the types of documents found in a welding environment and looks at their content, assessment requirements and purpose. Topics and discussions include quality plans; audit assessments; qualification documents; WPS-WPQR-WQTC – content and accuracy; assessment; significance of the information; implementation and control. material and consumable certificates; inspection and test documentation; Non-conformance reports; traceability records; Assessment of documents; end of course assessment.
The following two modules are a fast track route to RWC, which covers some of the details of earlier modules but at an advanced level but designed for more experienced personnel.

RWC 9 - Surveillance welding inspection and quality control in welding – Comprehensive

Duration: 4 day + 1 day exam
Cost: £1750.00 + VAT
This 4 day course is based around both previous modules and welding inspection as a policing function where course members would concentrate on before, during and after welding activities and their assessment and verification. It also allows for a more focussed and dedicated training programme designed to link each of the earlier modules together as a “module of consolidation” which concentrates on real world type situations related to welding inspection – a fundamental part of welding coordination.
Course members completing this module are also eligible to sit the British Institute of NDT’s PCN Welding Inspector examination* - positive proof of welding inspection expertise.

RWC 10 - Responsible Welding Coordinator – Comprehensive

Duration: 4 day + 1 day exam
Cost: £1750.00 + VAT
The final module in this series concentrates on welding coordination competence. Each course member will be assigned a steel product type project with the ideal of implementing all the necessary welding and quality characteristics required to fulfil the role and title of Responsible Welding Coordinator. This module as with the others, will be largely presented by a qualified C-EWE/CIWE (Certified European Welding Engineer/ Certified International Welding Engineer) as positive proof of both a competent welding engineer and professional trainer with over 30 years in training personnel at all levels of industry.
The final examination will be a competence based assessment of each candidate so that they are able to demonstrate welding coordination competence in their field.
Also remember we are approved by the International Institute of Welding for the delivery of the International Welding Specialist training programme.
